A question often asked of Christians is, “Why do bad things happen to good people?” Or “If God really loves us, why doesn’t He make our lives easy?” My response, though usually not the one warranted, is that life is hard, but God is always good. Bad things happen to everyone! Living for God does not guarantee a life free from pain or sorrow. However, it does guarantee strength to endure that pain and joy following that sorrow.
Weeping may endure for a night, But joy comes in the morning. (Psalm 30:5)
If life were easy, how would God have a chance to show Himself? When would He be able to truly prove just how much He really loves us? When would we ever NEED Him? If things always went our way, when would we find ourselves on our knees in the middle of the night crying out to Him?
No, friends, life is certainly not easy, but that doesn’t mean God is any less faithful. In fact, hindsight is generally 20/20. When I look back over the timeline of my life thus far, I can see God’s perfect hand in every single situation leading, guiding, and directing. There is always a test in the testimony, and each trial has been a test of faith, of endurance, of character. Through each situation, I have learned and grown as both a person and a Christian. As the song says, “You don’t know like I don’t what the Lord has done for me!” I’m not sure that our testimonies are necessarily meant for others to completely understand, but they are definitely meant to increase our own personal faith.
No, God never promised an easy road, but He did promise that He would be right beside us for every single bump along the way. Knowing He is there gives me the blessed assurance that the storm clouds will clear and the sun will shine again, thus I can stand firm in my faith and keep smiling. Life is indeed hard, but God is always faithful, always good!
Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong. (1 Corinthians 16:13)
